CHAPTER TWO

In the novel The Great Gatsby colors symbolize many things such as the characters through out the novel and they also show there moods and feelings. For Example different characters are different colors, Gatsby is green , Daisy is blue, Tom is Red. All of these color choices represent something in that characters personality. Daisy is the color blue , because it represents how sad inside she is. Tom is red because he is bold , and confident and red shows this in his personality. Color in this chapter is very significant to the rest of the novel, color really defines how a person is. It shows that what a person is wearing , or what color is best associated with them could tell their emotions.123

QUOTES

"occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track..."(27) This quote is one example of color in this chapter, its showing how the color is like a dark, and sad color.

"blue and gigantic their retinas are one yard high"(27). This is showing how blue is used throughout this chapter, as sad but bold.

"When he saw us a damp gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes"(29). This quote is comparing damp, and wet to the color blue.

"A white ashen dust veiled his dark suit and his pale hair..."(30). This is showing that white can also be a sad , short of gloomy color.

Analysis

During chapter two of the novel, there are a lot of statements concerning colors. Also the colors represent the characters emotions and personalities. Some colors such as blue , and gray mean sad, or gloomy. Colors like red and gold can mean bold or wealthy. Throughout the novel you learn who is which color , but in chapter two you learn that Tom Buchanan is the color red, because he is both bold and wealthy. A statements in chapter two of the novel is "occasionaly a line of gray cars crawls along an invisiable track..."(27). Another statement in chapter two revering to color is blue and gigantic their retinas are on yard high"(27). A third statement in the second chapter used be Fitzgerald is "When he saw us a damp of gleam of hope sprang into his light blue eyes"(29). That is just three of many statements about color used be Fitzgerald in chapter two.

CHAPTER ONE

In the novel , there are numerous amounts of egg references. Eggs symbolize the people of the East and West Egg, on the outside they are all the same but on the inside they are not always what they seem. During the first chapter you really get to understand the characters and how they are similar to eggs. Hard boiled, Warm Centered, Dozen, West and East Egg are some words used throughout the first chapter that have to do with eggs. With this chapter it shows how eggs and people are alike, they can be tough on the outside and soft on the inside. People aren't always as they appear to be.

QUOTES

"just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had"(1). This is just stating that some people aren't as fortunate as others , but when you are fortunate don't be rude about it.

" With special reference to the rather hard-boiled painting that hangs in father's office"(6).
Nick says this about his father, hard-boiled is also another reference to Eggs in this novel.

When Daisy spotted Nick she didn't even stand up and greet him, she said "I'm p-paralyzed with happiness"(13). This just shows how over exaggerated the characters are in this novel.

"Just because I'm stronger and more of a man than you are"(11). This quote is said by Tom Buchanan to Nick. It shows how self-centered and rude people from East Egg can be.

Analysis

To begin, in the first chapter you are introduced to the reference of Eggs. The setting of the novel is two fictional islands that are named, the West Egg and the East Egg. During the first chapter you learn that even though both the Eggs may look similar they are actually totally different. The West Egg is known to be the poorer of the two eggs, where as the East Egg is the richer of the two. The Eggs do not just represent the islands but also the personality's of the characters in the novel. The people in the novel seem to have a hard shell on the outside , but really on the inside they are the exact opposite. For example , one of the characters Daisy Buchanan acts all strong and tough even when she knows that her husband, Tom Buchanan is having an affair with a women named Myrtle, but on the inside shes torn to know that he would do that. Similiar to an egg a lot of the characters appear to be one thing , but in reality they are something totally different. This also shows how fake the people of West and East Egg can be, they are very self-centered and rude creatures. Throughout the first chapter you really get to understand the characters a little more , and you can also see how they react to different situations , show that no person no the less , no egg are exactly the same even though they may seem it.
