CHAPTER THREE

This Rolls Royce picture represents the wealth of the upper class people in the 1920s. Gatsby is one of those people that owns a Rolls Royce and is introduced in this chapter. Gatsby's party guests are in awe of his fancy and expensive car. Also Gatsby owns , two motor boats, a swimming pool, also just for the party he has employed 8 servants, and a gardener , caterers, an opera singer and an orchestra. Wealth in this chapter plays a large part of all the characters, Gatsby most of all. Tom and Daisy Buchanan are also two characters very fond of wealth. 102

"On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city..." This quote is about Gatsby and his lavish life style.

"Monday eight servant including an extra gardener toiled all day..." This quote is also showing the wealthy living of Gatsby.

"There was a machine in the kitchen which could extract the juice of two hundred oranges in half an hour..." In the 1920s, a machine that could make juice was a very lavish thing to own.

"I think he killed a man" This quote was a rumor told by Jordan during one of Gatsby's luxurious parties.

Analysis

During chapter three you learn a lot about the characters within the novel. Wealth plays a huge role in the lives of these people. For example , Gatsby's house is very lavish , filled with several gardens, boats , a swimming pool , and a beach front. Money to people like Gatsby is no problem, he also has a Rolls Royce and a few other expensive things. Another example of his wealth is that he owns two boats and he also has an abundance of alcohol at this house. This is during Prohibition, therefore showing that he has the money to get what he wants and not get in trouble for it, because he can just pay off the fine. Gatsby also has orchestra and an opera singer that attends this parties. He has these events catered and he also has his 8 servants go around his parties serving the guest. Also in this chapter you learn about how fascinated Gatsby is with wealth , you can tell by everything he owns and what he does.
